World Mental Health Day was initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health, and was first celebrated on October 10, 1992. Since then, It has been a day committed to raising more awareness and advocating for mental health issues on a worldwide scale, and decreasing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The significance has grown since the more recent worldwide challenges such as COVID-19 which has severely disrupted mental health for many.
World Mental Health Day 2024
For 2024, the theme of World Mental Health Day is “It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace”. One of the most pervasive mental health issues affecting many workplaces in our frenetic world is burnout. Increasing numbers of employees are experiencing burnout as a consequence of long-term stress.
Burnout happens gradually, which makes it harder to pinpoint. This has a profound impact on individual wellbeing and organisations. Persistence with the conditions that cause chronic stress isn’t sustainable for the individual nor the organisation.
According to recent studies:
15% of working-age adults are experiencing a mental health issue
Approximately 51% of long-term sick leave is caused by depression, stress, or anxiety.
20% of UK employees reported feeling unable to cope with workplace pressure and stress.
1 in 5 employees take a day off due to anxiety and stress.
Per employee whose mental health needs are overlooked, this costs businesses over £1,000.
There are numerous ways that organisations can support World Mental Health Day, which can include mindfulness sessions, or digital detox. Here are some ideas for activities that organisations can introduce to support and maintain employee wellbeing.
